Republic DayIn India, ‘Republic Day’ is celebrated on 26th January. It commemorates the date on which the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India on 26 January 1950. Thus, Republic Day celebration is the moment to remember the coming of the Constitution into effect.

Republic Day is celebrated with a great pride and enthusiasm throughout India. People celebrates this Day in colorful and exciting ways. The main attraction is the special Republic day parade taken out at Rajpath, in front of India gate in the capital Delhi. Early in the morning people from all over India, start to gather at Rajpath to watch this parade. The rich and colorful culture of India is showcased in the parade of the Republic Day. Traditional as well as cultural performances are given by professionals belonging to different regions. People, who can’t go there, watch it on television. Indian Prime minister with other ministers and chiefs of armed forces arrive at Rajpath. The day symbolizes the unity of the nation as it brings together people from different castes, creed, religions and regions to celebrate the day with the pride of being an Indian. The Rashtrapati Bhawan and important government buildings are decorated with light in the evening.
The real heroes of the nation are honored with the bravery awards and medals. National Awards are given to children for selfless sacrifice and bravery by the President. A row of IAF jets marks the end of the grand celebration, leaving behind a trail of colored smoke. It bids goodbye to the gathered audience by lavishing rose petals on them.
On this day people send warm wishes about Republic Day to their dear ones that lend a festive ambiance to the historic occasion. In schools and colleges, different competitions are held and prizes are also awarded to the winners. Broadcast, print and online media organize special contests, programs, and articles to promote the day. Movies about India’s freedom fighters are also shown on television. Many people spend the day with family members or close friends. Some of them go for picnic in a park or private garden, go to a film or eat lunch or dinner at home or in a restaurant.
