L’Inde a obtenu son ind\u00e9pendance suite \u00e0 un mouvement d’ind\u00e9pendance marqu\u00e9 par la non-violence et la d\u00e9sob\u00e9issance civile men\u00e9e par le Congr\u00e8s national indien (INC). L\u2019ind\u00e9pendance a co\u00efncid\u00e9 avec la partition de l’Inde, o\u00f9 l’Empire britannique des Indes a \u00e9t\u00e9 divis\u00e9 selon des lignes religieuses avec le dominion indien et le dominion pakistanais; la partition a \u00e9t\u00e9 accompagn\u00e9e par de violentes \u00e9meutes, des pertes massives, et le d\u00e9placement de pr\u00e8s de 15 millions de personnes en raison de la violence sectaire. Le 15 Ao\u00fbt 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, devenu Premier Premier ministre de l’Inde ce jour-l\u00e0, a hiss\u00e9 le drapeau national indien au-dessus de la porte de Lahore du Fort Rouge \u00e0 Delhi. Dor\u00e9navant, pour chaque Jour de l’Ind\u00e9pendance, le Premier ministre hisse le drapeau indien et prononce un discours.
