Cependant le d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique indien menace l&rsquo;\u00e9quilibre \u00e9cologique de New Delhi. Aujourd\u2019hui, au sens litt\u00e9ral du terme, New Delhi est une ville verte. Le paysage de la capitale a radicalement chang\u00e9 au cours des quinze derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es\u00a0; les arbres qui bordent chaque route de Delhi et les nombreux parcs permettent \u00e0 la ville de respirer. La v\u00e9g\u00e9tation occupe pr\u00e8s d&rsquo;un cinqui\u00e8me du territoire de Delhi, et entre 2001 et 2011 la ville a gagn\u00e9 pr\u00e8s de 15 000 hectares de verdure. Ainsi, il est possible de voir de v\u00e9ritables for\u00eats au c\u0153ur de Delhi, comme Sanjay Van o\u00f9 la faune a r\u00e9investi les lieux. Ceci explique que l&rsquo;on trouve encore \u00e9norm\u00e9ment d&rsquo;arbres le long des rues de Delhi. Il peut m\u00eame arriver qu&rsquo;un arbre ait pouss\u00e9 au milieu d&rsquo;une route sans \u00eatre abattu\u00a0! Toutefois, Delhi est encore loin d&rsquo;\u00eatre une ville \u00e9cologique et respectueuse de l&rsquo;environnement. C&rsquo;est la ville o\u00f9 la pollution atmosph\u00e9rique est la plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e au monde selon l&rsquo;organisation mondiale de la sant\u00e9 (OMS). EN 2015 la concentration en particules PM2.5, les plus dangereuses pour l\u2019organisme, est quinze fois sup\u00e9rieure au seuil acceptable selon l&rsquo;OMS. La ville n&rsquo;est pas \u00e9quip\u00e9e de plans d&rsquo;urgence ou d\u2019une politique d&rsquo;\u00e9missions comme P\u00e9kin. Les v\u00e9hicules individuels sont responsables de la plus grosse part des \u00e9missions de particules, or chaque jour, plus de 1 400 v\u00e9hicules sont mis en circulation \u00e0 Delhi. Le traitement des d\u00e9chets n&rsquo;est pas organis\u00e9 par la municipalit\u00e9 par mais de nombreux corps de m\u00e9tiers, d\u00e9di\u00e9s au tri des d\u00e9chets qui peuvent ensuite \u00eatre recycl\u00e9s.
