Take the train in India

If you travel in India, you definitly must take the train. Delhi is very well connected to the other cities in the country, for exemple it takes 2 or 3 hours to go to Agra, 5 hours to Jaipur, 6 hours to Amritsar, 12 hours to Udaïpur or Varanasi….

In the train if you have the AC don’t forget to bring some warm clothes because it can get really cold ! If you take night trains, it is better to take a locker for your suitcases.

You can chose between different classes :

• 1A : AC first class. There is no 1A in every train, but in the most popular trains. It costs the double of 2A, so it is very expensive. Here you can lock you inside your compartment, that have two beds or four beds. You will get towels, sheets, pillows and blankets. The problem is that when you book your train ticket, you can’t chose if you will be in a compartment with two or four beds…

• 2A : AC second class: there are four bed in the compartment, and you have privacy. You will get towels, sheets, pillows and blankets. Most of the upper class in India travels with this class.

• 3A : AC third class : There is no privacy, but is quite comfortable. Here, you will also get towels, sheets, pillows and blankets.

• CC : AC Chair Class (for train you take during the day, you have a normal seat).

• FC: First Class.

• SL : sleeper class. Take this class if you have a tight budget and if you want to experience the « real India ». There is no privacy as the coaches are divided in opened compartments with 6 beds in each. There is no AC but some fan can provide cool air, which is sometimes better than the strong AC !

• 2S : Second Sitting. This is for the poorest people in India. I don’t really recommend this class for long distance train, you will be sitting on the floor or stand up if it is crowded.
