Gurunanak Jayanti festival


Gurunanak Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the 1st Guru and the founder of the Sikh religion Guru Nanak Dev. The birthday of Guru Nanak Dev falls on Kartik Poornima (full moon day) in the month of November and this year it is on 6th of November.

Guru Nanak’s Jayanti is considered among one of the most important religious celebrations for Sikhs. Many Hindus based in Northern India such as states like Punjab, Kashmir, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh also celebrate this festival.

The celebration of Guru Nanak festival usually starts with prabhat pheris, also known as early morning processions that Starts from the Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) and then moves to different localities around the streets of the town singing hymns or shabads.

After this procession, there is Langar procession in which a special community lunch is arranged by the volunteers of the Gurudwaras. It is also held in the Gurudwaras. The communal lunch is held in order to spread the spirit (service) and bhakti (devotion).

In the evening, the Gurdwaras are filled with lights and all the Sikh people celebrate this festival all around the world. People also light their homes with candles and lamps in the evening.
